Back in the day, I owned a lot of rubber stamps. A. LOT. I loved them so much, I stamped and embossed all of my wedding invitations and reply cards. Sadly, I gave them all away and now that I’ve found myself needing some stamps for my art journal planner, I have none! So, a new obsession hobby was born…
I recently treated myself to the class Doodle and Carve by two of the Documented Life ladies. It was a great introduction to stamp carving and I recommend you start there! Since I also treated myself to the Speedball carving tool
(with a coupon, of course!), I had to be super cheap about my carving material. Enter the dollar store…
I found a few different sizes and shapes of erasers at the dollar store. Since they were so inexpensive, I wasn’t worried about ruining one or two while I was learning to carve my shapes. I sketched out some ideas first just to get an idea of the right size and then sketched right onto the erasers.
The Speedball tool has multiple tips that are stored in the handle and that helped with carving away both tiny sections and large outside sections.
I tested out the eraser stamps on different papers I had on my desk just to see if I had missed anything.
All of my tests will end up in my art journal as some point, even if it is just for a background!
The carving was completely absorbing. I could have done it for hours and I love that the eraser stamps are all done by me. Seeing my doodles come alive in a stamp was a totally fun experience! Next time you need a stamp, why not try carving one yourself? It is a great way to add a personal touch!
I link up at these great parties!
