This summer I’m participating in the Index Card a Day Challenge on Instagram hosted by Daisy Yellow Art. I’ll end up with around 60 cards when I am done so I figured out a way to use some of them for a functional purpose!

As the challenge requires (one of its few rules!) I used only 3×5 index cards and then added in a few of my favorite 6×6 stencils.
For the first layer on the cards, I applied watercolors through the following stencils: Corncob, Dutch Spring, My Sunshine, and Octogonal Lace. As you can see, I wasn’t very neat with my application but I wanted the layer to be a bit messy anyway!
I then grabbed a few Neocolor II
water-soluble crayons and added in more color and marks.
The next step was to pop all of the background colors by adding white acrylic paint on top using the Octogonal Lace, Dutch Spring, Complicated Hearts, and My Sunshine stencils, and a makeup sponge.
After folding the index cards in half, I stenciled on a variety of words on both sides of my bookmarks with black acrylic paint. I used the Julie’s Words, Correspondence and Have Faith stencils…they give you a ton of choices! I doodled a bit around some of my words to make them stand out more.
The final step in creating the bookmarks was to sew around each of the cards with black thread. I use this sewing machine
. I had inserted a bit of sari ribbon
in the tops of each card before sewing so that the thread would make it super secure. My husband has already claimed his! Which one is your favorite?
