I have been choosing a guiding word for the year since 2014 (here, here and here) and have found it to be a rewarding experience each time. This year my word is Flourish and now that we are half way through the year, I wanted to reflect a bit on it and its meaning to me. One of the best ways I’ve found to do this is by delving into some art making. The art journal page I made (and how I accomplished it) is below.

AtopSerenityHill.comI started with a page that I had used to clean off a stencil (Flower Tangle) from another project. The page also had book paper glued down. The art journal is one I made out of recycled cardboard and masking tape. I’ll share how at some point…

AtopSerenityHill.comTo add some color, I covered the entire page with Lemon Custard acrylic paint. This yellow is wonderfully transparent so I was able to still see all of the designs already on the page.

AtopSerenityHill.comMy word Flourish brings to mind gardens and flowers, so I grabbed a couple of stencils with fun flowers to reinforce that feeling. I used the Positivity and the Dutch Spring 6×6 stencils along with Raspberry acrylic paint to add another layer.

AtopSerenityHill.comContinuing with the flower theme, I glued down a flower I made as a practice piece and extended the colors out onto my page with more acrylic paint.

AtopSerenityHill.comThe final details that I added to the page were glued down synonyms of my word and a few doodled marks around the letters, rose/leaves and synonym words. Now I have a great visual reminder of my word to focus on as the year continues on.
