Since I am looking for some ways to keep me motivated to go back to school this fall and finish my BA, I thought a fun project involving one of my favorites, the dragonfly, might help. Making a pen or pencil topper that would make me smile while laboring away at homework seemed to be the ticket!

So off to Walmart I went to browse around the craft department and the Duck Tape® display caught my eye. It is still amazing to me how far Duck Tape® has come from the regular old gray kind I remember! The patterns are really fun and bright, and since Duck Tape® has a million uses, while not make it cheerful!

I decided to go with the mini version of Duck Tape® in a great chevron pattern to make the wings of my dragonfly.

1) I gathered together some pens, pencils, green pipe cleaners, a piece of white cardstock, scissors and a hot glue gun.

2) I added tape back-to-back to a piece of cardstock and drew on my wing shape with a marker. I then cut them out with scissors.

3) I wrapped the pens in tape but decided to just wrap the metal part of the pencil since it gets sharpened.

4) I cut a pipe cleaner in half, bent the top over to form the dragonfly head and then coiled the bottom to sit on the top of the pen or pencil.

The final step was to glue the wings to the pipe cleaner body. I did cut off a tiny piece of the wings so they were not so pointy. That way they lay flatter against the pipe cleaner. Use just a tiny dab of glue as the pipe cleaner is not that big of a surface! I then added the toppers to my pens and pencil! A bit of glue would keep them more secure but I decided to skip that step.
