A fabulous friend sent me a fantastic set of gel pens a couple of weeks ago so I grabbed one of my new stencils from The Crafter’s Workshop and created a super colorful mandala in my art journal! BTW…she bought the gel pen set at Costco here in the US.
The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. This post also contains affiliate links. The opinions I share are solely my own.
The first thing I did was to tape down the 12×12 Infinite Lace stencil into my large Dylusions art journal. I then traced all of the shapes in the stencil using a black Sharpie pen.
The stencil has some wonderful open spaces in it…perfect to fill up with tons of doodling with my new gel pens!
The gel pens come in so many colors, including neons, glitter and metallics. I also added in a few more doodling marks with the black Sharpie pen.
A little tip if you have never worked with gel pens: they take a while to dry! It seems some colors and types dry faster than others. I was forever wiping my hand across wet pen marks since I was not being patient enough to let each step dry. The smudge marks don’t bother me but they might someone else, so now you know!
The colors of the mandala were so vibrant but I knew that setting them against black would really make the design pop. I started by outlining the edge with a black Pitt artist pen.
I then painted the rest of the art journal page with black acrylic paint. To finish off the design, I used a white gel pen to add a few doodles around the edges.
I can’t stop looking at it! I love all the sparkly gel pen doodles that give the mandala that fun extra.
